Creolin® administered by different pathways in rats experimentally poisoned with Bothrops jararaca venom Ciência Rural
Carvalho,Lucas Rannier Ribeiro Antonino; Pereira,Helder Camilo da Silva; Silva,Hugo Thyares Fonseca Nascimento Pereira da; Lucena,Ricardo Barbosa de; Guerra,Ricardo Romão.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Creolin® when administered by different pathways in rats experimentally poisoned with Bothrops jararaca venom. In female Wistar rats, the Bothropic venom was inoculated intramuscularly, and then the rats were either treated with Creolin® (administered orally, topically, or intramuscularly), or with amixture of venom + Creolin® intramuscularly. Animals that received Creolin®, apart from the venom, by oral, topical, or intramuscular routes developed local symptoms and showed laboratory findings similar to those animals that received only the venom. Conversely, animals inoculated with the venom incubated with Creolin® showed no signs of local venom toxicity (necrosis or hemorrhage) and displayed...

Inotropic effects of extracts of Psidium guajava L. (guava) leaves on the guinea pig atrium BJMBR
Conde Garcia,E.A.; Nascimento,V.T.; Santiago Santos,A.B..
Many pharmacological effects have been ascribed to extracts of Psidium guajava L. (guava) leaves. However, in spite of its widespread use in Brazilian folk medicine and a reasonable number of scientific reports about it, we could not find any study dealing with its action on the mammalian myocardium. In the present study, by measuring isometric force, we observed that the crude extract of P. guajava (water-alcohol extract obtained by macerating dry leaves) depresses the guinea pig atrial contractility in a concentration-dependent fashion (N = 8 hearts, 15 trials). The compound with cardiac activity was concentrated by extraction in a Soxhlet apparatus using 17 M glacial acetic acid after removing the less polar fractions (hexane, chloroform, acetone,...

The pequi pulp oil (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.) provides protection against aging-related anemia, inflammation and oxidative stress in Swiss mice, especially in females Genet. Mol. Biol.

Abstract Continued exposure to reactive oxygen species and inflammation are the rationale behind aging theories and associated diseases. Scientific evidence corroborates the ethnomedicinal use of the oil of pequi (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.), a typical Brazilian Cerrado fruit, against oxidative damage to biomolecules and inflammation. We aimed to investigate in vivo the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of pequi oil on hemogram and DNA damage in healthy young adult and older middle-aged Swiss mice of both genders. Animals, aged 6-7 and 11-12 months, were orally treated for 15 days with pequi oil at 30 mg/day. Blood samples were used for hemogram and comet assay, and bone marrow for micronucleus test. Female controls of 11-12 months had...

Zootherapy in the Amazon: green anaconda ( Eunectes murinus ) fat as a natural medicine to treat wounds Acta Amazonica
SOUZA,Erika; WERNECK,Fernanda P.; MATOS,Leonardo B.; FRAGA,Rafael de.
ABSTRACT Zootherapy (the use of the therapeutic potential of animals) is at least 6,000 years old, and has been kept active throughout generations until modern days. Animal fat is commonly used in the zootherapeutic folk medicine from South America, specially the green anaconda’s fat, which is widely promoted as a natural medicine to treat wounds, even though there is no scientific evidence showing its efficacy. In this study we compared the total healing time and the proportional daily reduction of dorsal epithelial incisions in adult male Wistar rats treated with nitrofural (a commercial cicatrizing ointment) and with anaconda fat. We applied the treatments every two days and measured the incision diameter daily, during ten consecutive days. Differences...
